Like most stock dogs, the Catahoula has a bred-in and somewhat natural instinct to herd livestock. Catahoulas are not used as stock dogs only, they are also being used to hunt coon, squirrel, bear, deer, and hogs. They are used in search and rescue, drug detection, as companions for the handicapped, and in other law enforcement areas. When it comes to herding, Catahoulas are used on sheep, geese, turkey, hogs, and cattle.

I have heard and read stories of how Catahoulas bring home the woods hogs. It is said thmarehe dogs bay, tease, and run and the hogs follow. Guess which way the dog is running?? Toward home, natch!

I have a friend who rounds up cattle for the County. Sometimes he is called to get them off the Interstate highways, or wherever loose cattle get in the way. He is known for having good dogs and for being able to catch rough cattle. Once he was called by a fellow about 200 miles away, who had a herd of woods cattle that no one else could load. My friend’s Catahoulas bay hard. When he got to the woodsy area, he put his dogs out where he had seen fresh cow signs. In a matter of 30 minutes, the dogs found the cattle and began to bay. He noted where the cattle and dogs were and it is said that he then went to town, got a motel room and went to sleep. After a good night’s sleep he went back to where he had left the cattle and dogs and they were might tired--both dogs and cattle. He then brought in the trailers and loaded the cattle with ease.
